
Why Not Use Wooden Posts for a Garden Room?

A garden room may look deceptively simple from the outside, but the structure beneath it has a direct effect on how it performs for decades. When clients ask why not use wooden posts for a garden room, the short answer is that timber posts placed in or close to the ground can introduce avoidable risks around movement, moisture and long-term durability.
That does not mean timber has no place in a high-quality build. Timber is an excellent, sustainable material when it is properly specified and protected within the building envelope. The issue is using wooden posts as the primary support between a valuable insulated room and the ever-changing British ground below it.
Why not use wooden posts for a garden room?
A bespoke garden room is expected to be a comfortable office in January, a cool retreat in summer and a dependable extension of the home all year round. Its foundations must therefore do more than hold the building up. They need to keep the floor level, resist weathering, manage site conditions and provide a stable platform for the walls, glazing, roof and internal finishes.
Wooden posts can appear to be a quick, lower-cost option, particularly for a small shed, deck or lightly used summerhouse. A fully insulated garden room has much higher expectations. It carries more weight, contains more complex materials and needs tighter tolerances to keep doors, windows and finishes working as they should.
The main concern is not whether wood is strong. Properly graded structural timber is very strong. The concern is what happens when a timber post is exposed to damp soil, seasonal movement and repeated wet-dry cycles over many years.
Ground contact shortens timber’s useful life
Even pressure-treated timber is not immune to deterioration. Treatment significantly improves resistance to decay, but it does not make a post permanently maintenance-free when it sits in wet ground. Water can collect around the post, especially in clay soils or gardens with poor drainage. Over time, moisture exposure can affect the timber where it is most difficult to inspect.
The point where timber meets the ground is particularly vulnerable. It is also where the structure needs to remain soundest. If decay begins below ground level, it may not be obvious until the post has already lost strength. Repairing it can mean lifting part of the building, removing internal finishes or disrupting the surrounding landscaping.
Oxfordshire gardens can vary greatly from one plot to the next. A site may have heavy clay, made ground, a sloping lawn or drainage routes that are not immediately visible. Choosing a foundation system without understanding those conditions can lead to problems that only emerge after the garden room is in use.
Movement affects more than the floor
A wooden-post base can move for several reasons. Timber can shrink, swell or twist as moisture levels change. Soil can settle, soften in prolonged wet weather or shift with frost. One post moving by only a small amount may be enough to put the whole structure out of level.
In a simple garden store, that may be inconvenient but manageable. In a premium garden office or gym, it can affect the details that make the room feel finished. Doors may begin to catch, large glazed panels can become harder to operate, and small cracks can appear around internal linings or junctions.
Movement also places stress on the connections between the base, walls and roof. A garden room should work as one considered structure, rather than a collection of components expected to tolerate uneven support. This is especially relevant for rooms with wide bifold doors, picture windows, green roofs or heavier interior finishes.
Insulation and airtightness need a stable base
A garden room is not just an outdoor structure with a heater added. To feel comfortable throughout the year, it needs a well-insulated floor, walls and roof, alongside carefully managed junctions that reduce draughts and heat loss.
A foundation approach that leaves the floor exposed to damp air or makes insulation difficult to detail can compromise that performance. Cold air beneath the building is not automatically a problem, but the floor build-up must be designed to deal with it. Gaps, poorly sealed edges and unsuitable materials can lead to cold spots and a room that costs more to heat.
SIP panels are often chosen for garden rooms because they combine structural capability with excellent thermal performance. However, even a well-made SIP structure relies on an accurate, level and durable base. The foundation and superstructure should be considered together from the start, rather than treating the base as a separate shortcut.
Timber is still valuable when used in the right place
It is worth making a clear distinction here. Avoiding wooden support posts does not mean avoiding timber altogether. Timber framing, internal battens, cladding and carefully detailed roof elements can all form part of a beautiful, high-performing garden room.
The difference is protection. Timber used above ground, with suitable ventilation, membranes, flashings and drainage details, can be inspected and maintained. Timber used in permanent contact with soil is placed in a harsher environment and is far less forgiving if water management is poor.
There are situations where engineered timber posts may be appropriate, such as certain raised decks, temporary structures or carefully designed lightweight buildings. But for a made-to-measure garden room intended as a daily workplace, cinema room or fitness space, it is sensible to prioritise a foundation system designed for lasting stability.
Better foundation options depend on the site
There is no single foundation type that suits every garden. The right choice depends on the room’s size and weight, access to the site, ground conditions, slope, nearby trees, drainage and the intended use of the space.
Ground screws can be an excellent option on suitable sites. They create secure points of support with minimal excavation and can be particularly useful where access is restricted or where clients want to keep disruption to the garden to a minimum. They must be correctly specified for the ground and the loads they will carry.
Concrete pads or strip foundations may be appropriate where the site, structure or local ground conditions call for them. A reinforced concrete slab can also provide a very solid, level platform, although it involves more excavation and should be planned carefully around drainage and services.
Steel subframes are often used to create a precise, durable base above appropriate foundations. Properly protected steel resists the vulnerabilities associated with timber in ground contact and provides the accuracy needed to support modern panelised construction. The final specification should always be based on the individual project, not a standard answer applied to every garden.
A good foundation protects your investment
The lowest upfront cost is not always the best value. Replacing a decaying post base after a few years is far more disruptive than choosing suitable foundations before the room is built. The same is true of correcting a floor that has settled or dealing with doors that no longer align properly.

It gives the build team a dependable starting point, supports accurate 3D design decisions and allows the internal finishes to be completed with confidence. It is one of the less visible parts of the project, yet it quietly determines much of the room’s quality.
