SIP stands for Structural Insulated Panel. Each panel combines a high-performance insulation core with structural facings, commonly oriented strand board (OSB). Unlike a conventional timber stud wall, where insulation is fitted between the structural timbers, a SIP is both structure and insulation in one panel. This is a meaningful distinction. It is tempting to compare garden rooms based on one material or one advertised insulation thickness. In practice, the performance of a garden room depends on the complete system and the workmanship behind it.

A SIP structure must be properly sealed at panel joints, around openings and where walls meet the floor and roof. Small gaps can undermine airtightness and allow draughts or unwanted moisture movement. Equally, a highly airtight room needs suitable ventilation so that it remains fresh and manages humidity effectively, particularly in a gym or a space used by several people.

Glazing choices deserve equal attention. Large areas of glass bring daylight and a connection to the garden, but they also affect heat gain, heat loss and privacy.
